[Age] 13 (physical appearance; Mao’s real age is unknown. He is definitely older than one year old)
[Canon] Tales of Rebirth
[Point in time taken from canon] After Annie apologizes to Eugene (after Annie’s trial)

[Background]
The world of Tales of Rebirth- Karegia was a place where two races – Huma (humans) and Gajuma (beast-people) lived together. Gajuma possessed an ability to control powers of nature. That ability was known as Force.

Karegia was ruled by a Gajuma king, but one day something terrible happened. The king released his Force and died afterwards. The released power caused Force to awakened in many people all over the world. Those, who gained new powers thanks to that, couldn’t control their Force. In a state of berserk they caused damage and chaos.

At that time to the Karegia castle came a boy, whose new power also went berserk. The ability that awakened in him was Force of Fire. In berserk the boy lost his memory as he was repeating “Who am I?” over and over again. He didn’t know what was going on around him and he attacked anyone who got in his way. Everything was burning when commander Eugene, Saleh and Waltu appeared.

Saleh wanted to kill the boy, even though he noticed the child lost his memory and wasn’t controlling his Force at all. However, Eugene protected the boy from the attack and soon afterwards the boy lost consciousness.

When the boy woke up, the commander gave him the name “Mao” and decided to give him a place to stay until he recovers his memory.

That never happened though and soon Mao joined the army as a soldier, due to his abilities. Then one day Eugene was suspected of a murder and had to leave the castle. Mao, who begun to think of Eugene as a father, followed the other despite everything, deserting from the army.

One year after Mao lost his memory, the two were seen traveling the world in search of strong Force users. Eugene suspected that something bad is happening in the Karegia castle and in order to investigate the matter, they needed strong allies that would help them, if they were ever forced to fight the army.

Their search led them to a small village of Sulz, where they met a man named Veigue Lungberg. Veigue didn’t want to hear them out, but after Mao saved the man’s childhood friend Claire, Veigue decided to talk to them.

Everything would be okay if Claire didn’t got kidnapped by Saleh. From that point on Mao and Eugene traveled with Veigue to help him save Claire and to find out what was going on at the castle.

Eventually they gained some new allies (a girl named Annie, who sought revenge on her father’s killer; an optimistic factory worker Tytree and a mysterious fortuneteller Hilda) and a lot of things happened, but most of them isn’t that important here...

The important part is when the party meets the Sacred Beast of fire – Fenia. At that time it is revealed that Mao never had any memory to begin with. Mao was a being created by Fenia, as Sacred Beasts’ eyes in the world of humans. The Sacred Beasts are something like guardians of the world of Karegia. One day they were wondering what to do about Humas and Gajumas. The two races didn’t seem to live in peace and there were always conflicts between them. The Sacred Beasts started to wonder what to do about that. One proposed that it would be best to destroy both races, one said that maybe they should leave only one race and wipe out the other one. The Sacred Beast of fire Fenia and the Sacredd Beast of water Shaorune didn’t agree with those ideas. Then Fenia offered that she can create a being that will be their eyes in the world and will show the Sacred Beast how Karegia looks from the point of view of a person.

That was how Mao was created. Fenia named him “Orselg”. He was a literally selfless being that only purpose was to see the world. The Sacred Beast gave him free will, but the newly created being did not act like he had one. In the memories from the time before Mao was “Mao” that were shown to him by Fenia, he was shown as a seemingly apathetic boy, who spoke in a rather sleepy voice.

Mao himself didn’t remember anything from before he woke up in the Karegia castle. The thought that he wasn’t a human was too much for him though and he choose not to tell his companions about that, until he figures out what exactly he is or learns to accept the truth.

Asked if he got his memory back, he answered that yes, he did, but he decided to stay as “Mao” for a while longer.

[Personality]

When you meet Mao for the first time, you can be under an impression that he’s a typical, cheerful, talkative redhead that apparently has no worries at all. He’s always optimistic, always smiling, always acting as if everything is okay. He almost never takes things seriously and is usually seen teasing everyone, regardless if they’re friends or strangers. He tends to tease friends more though. Sometimes he can be rude or even a little mean, but most of the time he’s nice to people he meets and tries to get along with them.

Mao acts a lot like a child he’s age should. He can’t stay in one place for too long and gets bored pretty quickly. He always talks, like he says, to liven up the atmosphere (at the beginning of the game he travels with people that didn’t talk too much). He absolutely can’t stand “gloomy” people, but even if he says that, it doesn’t stop him from teasing said people about their “gloominess”. However if he can’t get someone to talk with him, he can get annoyed and go look for something else to do or find someone else to bother. Another thing that irritates him is when someone calls or treats him like a little child.

Mao has a lot of hobbies, but his favorite is signing ridiculous songs that he comes up for his own or Annie’s amusement. He also likes ghost stories. Or actually, he has a lot of fun telling those stories to people who are afraid of ghosts. If he finds out that someone’s afraid he will definitely tell them one (preferably when it’s dark outside and the atmosphere seems just right to tell ghost stories). But he also finds it amusing to make people believe in things that don’t exist. If he knows someone’s naïve enough to believe him, he won’t hesitate a moment to tell them the most ridiculous stories in the most serious voice and even giving them a seemingly reasonable arguments if they’re doubtful. Mao is good at lying and he can make up a believable lie on a spot if he has to.

He also loves cute things and it doesn’t really matter if it’s a thing, an animal or even a person. He’ll love them all and will be exclaiming how cute they are. He even sometimes says that he himself is cute or can argue that he’s cuter than someone else. He can also use the fact that he’s cute to his advantage. Because who can blame a little adorable kid for anything?

The imagine of child with no worries is not exactly what Mao truly is. A year before the start of the game’s plot, Mao lost his memories and became a soldier, with Eugene being the Commander at that time. Since he had nobody beside Eugene (who saved him and took him in), Mao became attached to the Gajuma and quickly started to treat him as his father figure. Moreover, Mao never put much attention to his memory loss. He always claimed that he doesn’t care about the past, because it’s the future that matters the most to him. Yet it isn’t entirely true. The boy simply doesn’t like to worry the others; he wishes for them to be always happy and that’s why he himself smiles, talks, teases others and acts carefree. He believes that by doing so, he can make people around him forget about their worries. But Mao also has his own worries, he just rarely voices them. If he has a problem he prefers to deal with it on his own. He does all of this to keep others from worrying about him.

Yet, acting like this all the time is hard for Mao at some points. When he finally learns the truth about himself, that is, that he is not human, but a creation of Sacred Beasts, he can’t bring himself to tell this to everyone, because he is both afraid of their reaction and also because he had a lot of doubts about himself. If I’m not human then what am I? This is something that Mao worries about the most and he has a lot of difficulties of accepting it as a fact. That is also why he keeps on searching for an answer, even though he knows he’s still himself. But no matter how much he is bothered by this problem he doesn’t tell about it to anyone, until later in the game, when he thinks it might be a goodbye with everyone.

When Eugene fallen victim to Geyorkias’ Impression, Mao was afraid that he might lose his father figure. It was the only time when Mao was seen in a state, when he was close to panicking. It was hard for him to stay calm, when he was so afraid of what might happen to Eugene. When the Gajuma was cured, it was the only time in the whole game when Mao was seen crying. He was crying from happiness though, glad that the other was okay.

Despite the cheerful, sometimes even silly attitude, Mao is actually a wise boy, who is also a quite good judge of character. When situation gets serious, he definitely isn’t the one to act without thinking. He can even use the situation and come up with a plan pretty quickly (like when he convinced the guard they need a boat, because they’re going to visit their mother in the capital). Even though he wasn’t around for too long (due to being actually created a year ago) he knows a lot and learns fast. He has a rather curious nature, too.

Another thing is that Mao is very kind. He cares deeply for those around him and is able to worry even for people he barely knows. He would never leave someone who needs help and can’t look at someone’s suffering. Eugene even once states that Mao’s kindness saved him many times.

He’s also very loyal to those around him. At the very beginning of the game he says that he left the army, because Eugene also left. He followed his father figure, even though Eugene himself didn’t want him to do so. Mao was aware of the danger, but he still choose to accompany Eugene on his journey. Another thing is that Eugene left the castle because he was a suspect of a murder. Mao knew about that, but he still believed in Eugene.

It would be also interesting to add that Mao is quite a brave little boy. After entering the factory that was turned into a jungle by Tytree’s berserking force, the group saw a giant, creepy flower, that revived each time they burn it. When Eugene saw that Mao was afraid of the flower, he commented that it was unusual for the boy to be afraid of something. In fact later in the game the only other thing Mao was afraid of, was to lose Eugene and to not be accepted since he’s not human.

Mao is an optimist. He tries to see a good side to everything, no matter how bad the situation would be. He is far from both tactless or naive though. If the situation calls for it, he can be as serious as everyone else. He never means to hurt anyone with his words. If he realizes he did something like that accidentally he will definitely apologize them.

Mao is also the only character that seems to be able to calm Eugene down. When Eugene was affected by the Impression, Mao’s presence was the only thing that calmed him down. When the Gajuma lost his calm in Anikmal, Mao was also the first to tell him that he is not acting like himself. Although the boy was also angered by the behavior of the people of Anikmal, who didn’t want to call a doctor for their sick companion, Mao was still more calm than both Eugene and Tytree. That proves that the boy can stay calm in most of the situations and can control his emotions if it’s needed. At that time, after all, it was more important to find the doctor than to argue with the people of Anikmal.

No matter how you look at it though, Mao is still a little child and there are still a lot of things he doesn’t know about. He often asks questions when there’s something he doesn’t understand. He also tends to act childish and can be sometimes both stubborn and a little careless.

…And he can act a little like a mean brat sometimes. A good example to this would be how he treats Hilda. Even though the woman is much older than him, Mao can bluntly tell her she’ll get fat if she eats too much or tell her she’s old or ask her how old is she. He doesn’t seem worried about being polite to his friends. However Eugene is a different case. Since he’s Mao’s father figure, when the boy acts careless, Eugene will scold him and Mao will usually agree with him, even if he’s reluctant to do so. Mao has a lot of respect for Eugene.

Mao is also the type of a person that will definitely do everything to prove he’s right. He doesn’t like to lose and can sometimes argue over silly things. His fights with Tytree can be really childish. To make things worse, once someone actually calls him a child, he instantly gets angry. The fact that Hilda calls him that whenever she has an opportunity annoys him to no end and so as in a revenge he calls her an old lady.

[Sample post]
[First Person]

- If someone provoked or attacked you, what would you do?

If I was attacked, I would fight back, of course! Provoking people to fight isn't nice.

- What is more important to you: having friends or living on your own? Why?

Having friends! Especially ones that you can talk to. It's always more fun when you have your friends with you!

- Do you have any future goals or dreams? What are they?

I’ve never thought about future and I don’t have any dreams or goals either... I wonder what could I do in the future...

- Oh no! Someone tripped and injured themselves right in front of you! What do you do?

Help them of course! And call Annie. She want to be a doctor so she’ll know how to help them!

- You find yourself with a cute, little penguin slave. What do you do with it?

Wait... slave?? It isn’t right! ... I would make friends with it! [especially if it’s cute.]

- Do you believe in the magic of friendship?

I do! When you’re with friends everything is possible!... Or something like that, right?

- The blue pill or the red pill?

Er... But I’m not sick, so I don’t need any pills... What’re they for anyway??

[Third Person]
Mao felt lonely without Eugene and his friends. He’d never been apart from his father figure for so long, ever since Mao lost his memory, but the red-haired boy wasn’t the one to complain. No, in this world of dreams there were a lot of people and he was sure he would be able to make friends here as well.

He would never forget the ones from his world, but no matter how much he would miss them he had to move on. Eugene wouldn’t want him to be sad, right?

Mao pulled out a few books from the many shelves of the library and started looking through them. When he found what he was looking for a happy smile appeared on his lips.

“This sounds like a good story!” he exclaimed. “But who can I tell this story to?”

He made a thoughtful look and was silent for a longer moment. Then he smiled again and pulled out his Dreamberry.

“I’ll have to ask if anyone here liked ghost stories~ And maybe someone knows any good ones? I’d love to hear them all! I could tell them to Annie later...”

He shook his head as if he just remembered something.

“Ah, but maybe I shouldn’t...? Last time she fainted with her eyes still open...”

He really didn’t want to make Annie faint like that again. Even if it was fun to tell ghost stories to people who are afraid of them, Mao meant no harm to anyone.

But then he realized it would probably take a while until he saw Annie and the others again. His expression saddened, then he shook his head again and made an angry look.

“Ah, if I keep thinking like this, I’ll end up as gloomy as Veigue!”

After saying that Mao walked out of the library. He was eager to find someone who would listen to his scary stories.

[Why do you want to play this character in Somarium?] I love playing Mao and I thought that among the characters I play here I really could use one that would be a social butterfly so ... XD
[Which rule was your favorite and why?] be nice to people!
[Where did you hear about Somarium?] I play here
